Mobile phones that belong to the mid-range have become an increasingly important market niche for manufacturers seeking to attract the attention of users who, without opting for high-end smartphones, are looking for a device that offers them something more than the models of the entry range.

In this regard, the mid-range mobiles that have landed on the market during this first half of 2022 continue the path started by their predecessors long ago. It is worth noting the quality of the panels that they incorporate, the commitment to fast charging technology or the performance that they provide not only to face day to day but also to play titles like Genshin Impact. Also important is the work carried out at the photographic level and the inclusion of technologies such as NFC for making mobile payments or 5G.

What mid-range mobiles 2022 have we tested?

With a budget that starts at 250 euros and reaches 500 euros, these are the selected smartphones: Motorola Edge 30 (8.75), Oppo Find X5 Lite (8.25), realme 9 Pro+ (8.5), Samsung Galaxy A53 5G (8.25), Vivo V23 5G (8.75) and Xiaomi Poco X4 Pro 5G (8.5). When analyzing them, these are the aspects that have been taken into account:

  • Design: Beyond its aesthetics, its construction quality (materials and finishes), grip and ergonomics have been valued.
  • Screen: XXL panels are also imposed in the mid-range, favoring the experience when browsing the Internet, watching a movie or playing games. All those chosen for this comparison provide very good quality, although differences can be seen in aspects such as the refresh rate, a value that provides greater or less fluidity when interacting.
  • Performance: Does the phone render and flow well or does it ‘hang’? How does it handle? And multitasking? In this performance, the response capacity of the batteries and their recharging times have also been evaluated.
  • Cameras: they have been tested in different situations to see how their sensors respond. In no case can the results obtained be compared with the photos and videos of high-end mobile phones.
  • Others: what connectivity options they include, how their biometric systems work (both fingerprint and facial unlocking), the sound section

For a week, each of these five proposals has become our usual mobile phone: with them we have browsed the Internet, watched movies, played games, also accessed email and social networks… Thus, it has been possible to check their performance and the autonomy of its batteries. Special attention has also been paid to the photographic section, making captures in different scenarios and videos.

All of them have left really positive impressions and the scores received reflect this. There has been a tie between Motorola Edge 30 and Vivo V23 5G phones. The first stands out above all for its very light weight and thickness, as well as for the 144 Hz of its screen. The second performs very well and the fact that it includes a double camera for selfies allows it to offer something that the rest do not have.

Motorola Edge 30 mid-range mobile: our choice

In terms of thickness and weight, it breaks with all the schemes by showing a 6.59 mm profile and only weighing 155 gr. With IP52 protection against water, it is a phone that guarantees a very good user experience in all valued aspects, not only from the design point of view. It comes with Android 12 and a customization layer with little blockware, which is always appreciated, as well as a technical configuration that houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor (compatible with 5G networks), 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB internal storage. For its part, the battery offers a capacity of 4,020 mAh, the lowest in the comparison: it is understandable given its very thin thickness. Fast charging stands at 33 W.

Of the camera module, in addition to the main one, the ultra wide angle (both incorporate 50 megapixel sensors) does a good job that stands out for the interpretation of color, detail, sharpness… We end by talking about the screen, which is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 glass. It is a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel with very thin frames, a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels, compatibility with HDR10 + content and a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz that provides superior fluidity. All these specifications allow you to enjoy a very good experience at the image level that, from the point of view of sound, bears the Dolby Atmos seal.

Vivo V23 5G mid-range mobile

Bordering the psychological barrier of 499 euros, this model (made of glass and aluminium) is available in two colours: black, which is the analyzed version, and another called Sunshine Gold which has the peculiarity of changing color as it happens with the realme 9 pro+ With a profile of only 7.39 mm, its configuration -led by the MediaTek Dimensity 920 processor with 5G support- stands out above all for offering 12 GB RAM, to which must be added 256 GB of internal storage. Meanwhile, the operating system that it incorporates is Android 12.

And the battery? The fact of showing such a thin thickness explains why its amperage (4,200 mAh) is slightly lower than the rest. However, since it comes with a 44 W charger, the recharge is completed quite quickly. Regarding the screen, it mounts an AMOLED panel and its specifications are 6.44 inches and 2,400 x 1,080 pixels of resolution. The most striking thing about this display (and the entire phone) is that at the top it houses a drop-shaped night with two sensors for taking selfies, one 50 megapixel and another 8 megapixel wide angle that comes for group selfies. phenomenal. Without a doubt, the results are worth it and for users who take many photos of this type, it is a very interesting claim. They have at their disposal different filters with quite natural results and a double front flash with three lighting options.

Xiaomi Poco X4 Pro 5G mid-range mobile: the alternative

It takes over from the Poco X3 Pro smartphone and does so by betting (among other aspects) on an improved design in which the layout of the rear camera module stands out: it is rectangular and large. It is chaired by a 108-megapixel main sensor and although the experience is correct and does not disappoint in broad daylight, at nightfall the quality decreases, as expected.

Eyes quickly fall on the screen. It is an AMOLED display that ensures good viewing angles and vivid colors, ranking among the best in its price range. Specifically, it has a size of 6.67 inches, 2,400 x 1,080 pixels of resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate that must be activated before and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. As it reaches a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits, it can be used in full light of the day comfortably. The speakers are dual and support Hi-Res Audio.

At the performance level, the incorporation of the Snapdragon 695 processor entails a small setback compared to the Snapdragon 860 chip of its predecessor since the latter is much more powerful and is aimed at users who above all want a mobile phone to play. This does not mean that the Snapdragon 695 is a bad processor, because on a day-to-day basis it works when browsing the Internet, consuming multimedia content, managing mail… In addition, it allows you to offer 5G support (the Poco X3 Pro does not). And the battery? Very good for Xiaomi. Not only because of the 5,000 mAh but also because it includes a 67 W charger.

Realme 9 Pro+ mid-range mobile: best value for money

At the design level, the back has received a special treatment that explains why the phone changes color when it receives direct sunlight. It comes standard with the Android 12 operating system that is combined with the manufacturer’s UI 3.0 customization layer, while its configuration lives up to what is expected of a terminal that “moves” within its price range. The MediaTek Dimensity 920 processor (with 5G support) is solvent, even with games like Genshin Impact. For its part, the internal memory has a size of 8 GB and the internal storage ‘stays’ at 256 GB because it cannot be expanded.

The display also gets positive reviews. It is a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel and Full HD resolution with a 90 Hz refresh rate that also incorporates a fingerprint reader that works correctly. This good impression is also transferred to the part dedicated to the battery (4,500 mAH and 60 W fast charge) and to the main camera sensor: it is the Sony IMX 766 model with optical image stabilization, an option available on other smartphones. like the OnePlus Nord 2 5G and the Oppo Find X5 Pro.

Oppo Find X5 Lite mid-range mobile

This 5G terminal sports a beautiful and sophisticated appearance, and stands out mainly for its autonomy and display. Thus, following in the footsteps of its competitors, it winks at fast charging that makes its 4,500 mAh can be charged in approximately 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, the screen meets all the necessary requirements to consume multimedia content and enjoy a good experience in terms of contrast, detail or color. In this case, the manufacturer is committed to a 6.43-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels with a screen refresh rate of 90 Hz and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection; brightness scales up to 800 nits when HDR or HDR10+ content is displayed. By the way, the fingerprint reader is located below this screen and although it works well, it is sometimes slow. Although its single speaker performs well, it’s a shame we didn’t include two to enjoy stereo sound.

The combination of its software with the hardware chosen by Oppo allows the phone to flow well and the user to feel comfortable. In addition, the option to virtually expand the RAM (part of the 8 GB) is appreciated. As for photography, its 64-megapixel main camera has been used above all. It does not do a bad job, but in this section other manufacturers offer better results.

Mid-range mobile Samsung Galaxy A53 5G

It is proposed as a balanced option that meets the needs of the user it is aimed at, although it has to polish some other detail. The most important is related to the battery: although it incorporates a 5,000 mAh model, it is missing that it includes a fast charge charger in the box, and that supports a charging power of up to 25 W.

Provided with IP67 certification that protects it against dust and water, the connectivity section has been well solved and at a photographic level it provides one of the best sensations, especially due to the performance that its 64-megapixel main sensor with optical stabilization ensures. image. It also records at 4K at 30fps, an option offered by other models in the comparison.

At the multimedia level, its panel denotes great quality thanks to a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display, Full HD + resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and 800 nits brightness. It also has stereo speakers but does not incorporate the 3.5 mm jack output. And performance? Although the average user can function without problems in general, here other mobiles do a little better since a little more power is missing. Its Exynos 1280 processor is combined with 8 GB RAM and internal storage capacity available in two sizes (128 or 256 GB) expandable with a microSD card up to 1 Terabyte.
