Carlos gets his first victory in Formula 1 in his 150th Grand Prix

The man from Madrid returns to the fight: 54 points behind Max Verstappen

One of the aspects that Ferrari took into account when signing Carlos Sainz Jr. was his radio communications. Yesterday precisely one of these remembered his intelligence again, his cool head in moments of pressure and his hunger. “Stop inventing” are the words that resonate in the minds of fans 24 hours later. One of those messages that leave a mark.

“It’s about time”, were the first words of Carlos after his victory. 150 Grand Prix waiting for this. Carlos Sainz has not stopped until he achieves it. His run of bad luck seemed to be taking him in the opposite direction, but he’s been determined to row against the tide all this time.

The result? Get back into the fight for the title. A win on a troubled day for Max Verstappen tastes twice as good. Carlos is 54 points behind Max Verstappennot much further than his teammate Charles Leclerc, 43 points, less than two wins away.

Problems in recent races have left Ferrari in a difficult position. Until recently we saw Mattia Binotto practically throwing in the towel in the battle for the title. Red Bull takes 63 points from them and Mercedes is not so far behind them, at 61.

Thus, Binotto and the wall yesterday sought to maximize the points to recover his candidate for the title in the first races, Charles Leclerc. A driver who, despite having damage to his car yesterday, was very fast, but the circumstances of the race did not help him. Ferrari could not stop him when he wanted and he had to accept it.

In the race Charles did not stop asking for an opportunity. On lap 31 they gave it to him, but Carlos made his position clear. The Spaniard gave in to the change of positions, but he did not want to let go of the victory and he showed it with a powerful and unforgettable message on the radio:

  • Ferrari: “The instruction is to give Charles ten car lengths so he has room to breathe.”

  • Sainz: “Guys, I’m under pressure from Hamilton. Please don’t ask for these things. Let’s stop inventing. Let’s stop inventing. I’m under pressure too.”

A whole declaration of intent that will surely be a before and after for Carlos.
