The director of Amazon Customer Fulfillment in France, Italy and Spain, Fred Pattje, It has advanced this Thursday that the center that the multinational will launch next March in the Zaragoza Logistics Platform (Plaza) will support company operations throughout Europe.

Pattje has met with the President of the Government of Aragon, Javier Lambán, in the Pignatelli Building, confirming that this center will create more than 1,000 jobs in the next three years. “Practically all of them will be men and women from Aragon,” Lambán said.

The logistics center, with more than 52,000 square meters, will be used by the multinational to store and manage small and large products which will subsequently be processed and sent to other logistics centers in Europe.

In his meeting last June with Javier Lambán in the Pignatelli building, Fred Pattje already advanced that this new center -in whose construction sustainability has been a fundamental pillar, ensuring a low carbon footprint- “will play a key role” for its operations.

Amazon, which has decided to transfer part of its activity to Zaragoza, firmly began meetings with the Government of Aragon in July 2018 to enable its implementation in the Autonomous Community.

In addition to the investment and generation of jobs that this pioneering center represents, its location in Aragon will contribute to further improving its positioning internationally and will bring additional growth, wealth and employment thanks to the arrival of other projects attracted by the Amazon facility. , a global logistics emblem.

Its installation has been possible thanks to the Promotion of the expansion of Plaza in 2020which meant the urbanization of about 34 hectares and the first increase in surface area of this public platform, fully occupied by the e-commerce multinational.

Pattje has indicated that all the material that arrives from the suppliers will enter the logistics center and the merchandise will be distributed from there, “not only in Spain”. He has highlighted the importance of technology for Amazon and that the roofs will have solar panels.

Business leadership

“Since we came to the Government, in 2015, we have proposed to be proactive and ambitious in the search for investments for the Community”explained the head of the regional government, adding: “In the absence of powerful economic incentives that the communities do not have, we had to make ourselves available to investors to make the community attractive and remove any type of obstacle to their investment decision.”

Javier Lambán has highlighted the Amazon “special symbolism” and its “vocation to be a leader in the field of logistics”, emphasizing that with this new center the “international projection” of Plaza “beyond employment and the activity it generates” is reinforced.

After contacting Amazon in 2018, the regional government opted to expand Plaza, occupying 34 hectares, and is now undertaking the second expansion. The synergies between the needs of the multinational and the takeoff of Aragonese logistics, a benchmark in southern Europe, have led to the arrival of new companies and the need to open up more industrial land.

Therefore, Lambán recalled that currently, Aragón Logistics Platform (APL), work together with Cipsa Norte, SL in the development of a new extension -Plaza 4.0– To respond to the demand for quality logistics land by companies, offering a new area of 2.4 million gross square meters. “Our dreams have come true, in the midst of so many nightmares, logistics being the priority and the main economic engine of Aragon”, concluded Javier Lambán.

This center will be the third to be located in Plaza, where two other logistics facilities are already in operation, one managed by DHL and the last one, the logistics station of more than 6,600 square meters for last-mile delivery, also located in Plaza, which began operating in 2021. To these is added the warehouse of Amazon Fresh, opened in the City of Transport in Zaragoza in 2022 for supermarket products.

Outside the logistics field, Amazon Web Services (AWS) officially launched in 2022 the three data centers -located in the Logistics Platform of Huesca (Plhus) El Burgo de Ebro and Villanueva de Gállego- that make up the eighth European region of the company. AWS investment in Aragon will amount to 2,500 million euros in ten years and it will mean an impact of 1,800 million, as well as the creation of 1,300 jobs.

In 2022, the presence of prominent companies in the Plaza continued to increase. The expansion of Inditex and the establishment of the multinational MSC, the leading container shipping company, stand out among the main developments.

Last year the platform from Zaragoza signed the sale of more than 72,000 square meters and the reservation of another 8,000. Plaza was positioned last July as the first Spanish platform both for its quality and its degree of innovation, according to the opinion of 4,400 managers and senior professional profiles of companies in the logistics sector throughout the country in the ‘C Logistics Awards and Support’.

To further reinforce the position of the Autonomous Community as a leading national and international logistics power, APL also has its sights set on the development of the Zaragoza-Algeciras railway highway, one of the priority projects of the Government of Aragon in logistics.

In 2024 this 1,074 kilometer long corridor between the Port of Algeciras and the Zaragoza Logistics Platform will connect Europe with Africa from Aragon. At present, Plaza has a gross area close to 13.5 million square meters sold at 90.81%, with more than 500 installed companies and 16,000 active employees.

Among the companies located there, apart from those already mentioned, are logistics operators and transport companies -such as DHL, Grupo Sesé, Grupo Logístico Carreras, or TXT-; freight forwarders -JCV Shipping &Solutions or Decoexsa, among others-; companies that install the distribution warehouse of their own products -Mercadona, Caladero, Decathlon, B/S/H-, as well as service and commercial companies.
