The fibromyalgia It is the most common cause of chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain. In Spain, the prevalence is aroundl 2.4% of the population adult over 20 years of age and usually affects much more women than to men. Its origin is unknown. It is believed to be caused by a disturbance in the processes of pain control at the level of the central nervous system. It is characterized by chronic pain generalized and fatigue, frequently associated with mood and cognitive alterations.
However, the obstacles of this disease begin from the first moment, the diagnosis. There is no conclusive evidence and patients resort to many medical opinions until they discover the origin of their pain. In this sense, it is true that advances in medicine and science are becoming more precise and identify more effectively the symptoms of various diseases.
In the case of fibromyalgia, it often manifests with a surprising variety of syndromes companions such as: irritable colon, overactive bladder, sleep disturbances, bruxism, among others, and hypersensitivity to pain. Therefore, on many occasions, it is difficult to detect. It is also currently known that in the vast majority of cases, fibromyalgia can be associated with eye symptomssuch as foreign body sensation or irritation, and visual disturbances, such as blurred vision, coexisting with dry eye syndrome and changes in corneal sensitivity.
67% OF PATIENTS
To prove your relationship, tests have already started 60 patients (40 with fibromyalgia and 20 from the control group), who will undergo an analysis of the fine nerve fibers of the cornea with confocal microscopy. According to Dr. Vergés, head of the Ophthalmology Service at Hospital Universitari Dexeus to La Razón, “it is a non-invasive test on the cornea, which avoids having to resort to invasive biopsies”.
The samples obtained in this way will allow the study and analysis of some genetic biomarkers, determining that the mutation that triggers fibromyalgia it is the same that causes the alterations of the cornea of the dry eye. Thus, the results will be extrapolated to the rest of the organism.
According to doctors who observe affected patients, ocular symptoms manifest in more than half of patients. It is estimated that 67% of fibromyalgia patients present these symptoms of Dry Eyea pathology that causes hypersensitivity in nerve fibers of the cornea. They simply suffer because the disease attacks the central nervous system and this, in turn, affects the nerve fibers of the cornea (fine fiber) and not its lesions. Symptoms are usually a feeling of sand or even type pain punctures in the eyes when blinking.
According to the first results of the study, which are expected to be ready by the end of the year, the 80% of the patients had alterations in the corneal fibers, 40% were severe, 50% moderate and 10% mild.
These data were presented at the XLVII National Congress of Rheumatology, although a solid correlation has not yet been established, which they hope will be established at the end of the study. With these results they hope that the study will contribute to the implementation of more specific treatments and a better diagnosis. At the ophthalmological level, Dr. Vergés specifies, ”I would totally modify the treatment protocol for these patients. It would be necessary to go to strategies based on the improvement of the nerve fibers through the radiofrequency wave high intensity pulsed light.
