Mercadona is one of the most popular supermarket chains in Spain. Unlike other chains, the Valencian company has never opened its establishments in Sundays and holidays. However, for the summer of 2022, the company has decided to change this situation for the benefit of consumers. On the other hand, the schedule will also change on the rest of the days of the week, since the supermarkets will open longer than in the rest of the year.
Although within the philosophy of the company is to take care of its employees (an example is the salaries of its employees, which range between €1,400 and €1,500 gross annual full-time) the decision not to open on Sundays and holidays is not for this reason, or at least not as the main reason. According to Juan Roig, president of Mercadona, the reasons were purely economic. “If we opened on Sundays we would have to raise the pprices to people who buy during the week ». For this reason, it is only in special circumstances that Mercadona opens on Sundays, which, according to Roig, «in certain circumstances Let there be two days of celebration together.
Already well into the summer period of 2022, when people begin to enjoy their vacations, and both Spaniards and tourists change their purchasing and consumption habits, Mercadona has decided to make a change in hours.
Mercadona opens on Sundays for the summer
This change will apply to coastal areas, because these areas are the ones that benefit the most from summer tourism and, therefore, demand increases.
The opening of the Mercadona supermarkets for the summer (effective from June 27 to August 29) will go from Monday to Sunday, with opening hours on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This change will only apply to those coastal areas, such as Alicante, Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz), Benalmádena (Málaga) or Cubelles (Barcelona) and more. The hours of each establishment can be consulted on Mercadona’s own website.
From Monday to Friday, what is Mercadona’s time change?
In the rest of the areas of Spain, where there are also numerous supermarkets of the chain, the opening hours will also be extended. Although the opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., in summer it will be extended by half an hour more. That is, the opening hours will be from 9 in the morning until 10 pm.
Keep in mind that, like the opening measure on Sundays in coastal areas, this extension of hours will be in force until August 29, returning to its usual hours from that day.
Eye, these are the days that Mercadona does not open
Despite the fact that, with this change in hours, the supermarket chain would be opening continuously until August 29 in coastal areas, there are some days that in summer 2022 Mercadona will not open in some communities:
- July 25, 2022 (Monday): Mercadona will not open its supermarkets in autonomous communities such as Navarra, the Basque Country, Galicia and the Community of Madrid. Why doesn’t it open? Its establishments will remain closed due to the festivity of Santiago Apóstol
- August 15, 2022 (Thursday): Mercadona closes for the festival of the Assumption of the Virgin, which is a national holiday.
However, it must be taken into account that the chain also has online sales and customer service that goes from Monday to Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (1 hour less in the Canary Islands). To do this, Mercadona has a telephone number (800 500 220), a virtual assistant who can be contacted through Whatsapp, email and the company’s own social networks: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin.
