Throughout 2022, Renault is celebrating a very important event, the 50th anniversary of one of its most important models in its long history. For this reason, he has just presented the Renault 5 Diamant, an electric show-car developed together with the French designer Pierre Gonalons.

Authentic pop culture symbolBetween 1972 and 1984, more than five million units of the Renault 5 were sold in numerous countries. To celebrate it, the French manufacturer proposes a series of events and activities, including events and operations on social networks.

The diamond brand has teamed up with the famous interior designer to reinvent the iconic French utility vehicle and the result has been this Renault 5 Diamant, an original electric show-car born from the meeting of the worlds of interior and automobile design.

It is an electric car that shows the designer’s vision of the car of the future, merging car codes with interior design codes.

“In my opinion, the Renault 5 embodies a pop, optimistic and distinctly contemporary lifestyle. With the Renault 5 Diamant I wanted to pay homage to its revolutionary design and transfer my world of shapes and colors to the world of the car”, says Gonalons.

Pierre Gonalons was inspired by the decorative arts and, more specifically, in high jewelry, which can be seen in the precious and innovative details. The Renault 5 Diamant retains the characteristic lines and iconic shape of the original model.

However, under that familiar silhouette there has been a profound transformation. Under the hood, the car is equipped with a electric motorthe first element that indicates its modernity.

Visually, its design introduces high quality details that invite you to discover this new and refined mix. On the outside, the bodywork has been streamlined to better highlight the R5’s iconic lines and familiar components have been deliberately lifted from their surroundings and magnified, both in form and finish.

The headlights and lights are designed like precious stones and the wide rims, inherited from the Alpine versionhave been smoothed and have in their center the famous sun of Pierre Gonalons.

The exterior color is three layer paint, made of gold pigments on a pink base. It is covered with a glossy varnish that provides a very changeable effect with golden reflections in the sun, and a more bluish tone in the shade.

handcrafted interior

Inside, purity prevails. Thanks to the joint experience of the Renault design team and the craftsmen involved in the project, Pierre Gonalons was able to simplify the car by keeping only the most essential elements.

The door handles and window regulators, as well as the gear lever, are made from an unfinished sphere, treated with very Parisian references in pale gold brass, stainless and very durable materials.

The steering wheel, with a very particular but functional shape, is made of marble on carbon and even the vehicle key receives a specific treatment. All this with Renault’s experience to give the whole a seamless automotive credibility and realism and without compromising the use of functional elements.

A highly technological Renault 5

The Renault 5 Diamant also brings technology. To begin with, it is a fully electric car and incorporates a fingerprint reader to unlock the doors. As a battery-powered vehicle, it has a gear lever with three positions (forward, neutral and reverse).

Three round digital counters celebrate the world of watchmaking and display the essential information: speed, load and time. The driver’s mobile phone provides everything needed in terms of navigation and infotainment and is specifically located in a slot in the center of the dashboard.

Flagship of French craftsmanship

The Renault 5 Diamant project has benefited from the experience of Design and Solutiona company specializing in the creation of unique vehicles, which was responsible for the development, assembly and final production of the show-car.

In this sense, one of the most outstanding aspects of the electric show-car is its careful sense of detail, using top quality materialssupplied by artisans.

The steering wheel and inner recesses are made of recycled marble by Mineral Expertiseusing a French marble (the ‘Grand Antique d’Aubert’), worked in a tubular way, which makes it lighter and more malleable.

The seat fabric is produced by the textile firm Metaphorswhile the fabric for the dashboard is made by the century-old company Le Mane, an artisan who masters the art of weaving horsehair by hand. The mohair wool rug is manufactured by Pintonone of the last French tapestry manufacturers, from its historic headquarters in Aubusson.

Finally, both the gilding of the car’s decorations and the monogram on the hood are carried out by the workshop Bertin-Aubert of Paris, which stands out for its know-how and precision in execution.

An NFT version and auction

Renault and Pierre Gonalons will also develop a collection of numerous NFTs inspired by the Renault 5 Diamant that will be presented in September.

The Renault 5 Diamant will be auctioned a few weeks later, along with the NFT version. After the auction, the proceeds will be donated to give me 5the new social responsibility project of the French brand dedicated to new generations through sport and music.
