King Felipe and Queen Letizia and their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía have visited the Cartuja de Valldemossa this Monday as part of the cultural activities of your holidays in Mallorca.

This is the first public appearance of the entire royal family these days on the island, in which They alternate rest with cultural, sports and institutional activities.

The king and queen and their daughters arrived in this town in the Sierra Tramuntana after 7:30 p.m. and went to the Joan Carles I de la Cartuja gardens, where They have posed for photographers in the first picture of the entire family this summer.

Upon arrival, the king has been congratulated for the second place achieved by the Spanish Navy ship Aifos 500in the first regatta of the Copa del Rey-Mapfre, and, when asked about it, he replied with a smile that “second, for now”, since there are still five days of regatta left, in which Don Felipe hopes to be able to participate .

Upon their arrival at the Cartuja, the king and queen were received by the mayor, Nadal Torres, from the Valldemossa Independent Group, and the Professor of Art History at the University of the Balearic Islands, Concepción Bauzá, who has accompanied the kings and their daughters on the tour.

After visiting the monuments, the kings and their daughters have made a brief tour of the townespecially along Blanquerna street, where locals and tourists crowded both to greet and record the royal family with their videos.

The Charterhouse of Valldemossa It is a monumental complex initially erected by King Jaime II as a royal palace for his son Sancho in 1309. After falling into disuse, the complex was ceded to the Carthusian monks in 1399.

The current Cartuja is the result of the expansion works of the 18th century in which a new church and a new monastery were built next to the converted palace, and of the changes produced by the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1837.

Today, some of the cells are privately owned and others are open to the public and house artistic and heritage collections such as those relating to the legacy of the Carthusians and their lifestyle, the monastic pharmacy, the stay of the musician Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand.

Likewise, several of the cells are occupied by the Municipal Museum of Valldemossa and its sections dedicated to the Guasp printing press, the Archduke Luis Salvador, the painters of the Sierra de Tramuntana and the contemporary art collection.
