The gala of the XXXVII edition of the Goya Awardswhich will be held at the Seville Conference and Exhibition Center (Fibes) next February 11thwill have a great novelty for this year 2023, since nominations will rise to five in each of the categoriesas announced this Wednesday by the president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain, Fernando Mendez-Leite.
In that sense, he has said that «the board of directors of the Academy approved by majority the decision that there would be five nominations per specialty, so that More nominees will come to Seville than other years». On this same matter, the first vice president of the institution, rafael portelacommented that «the step from four to five nominations is going to mean an important change in the gala, since there will be more actors and technicians nominated.
It will be the biggest gala in history». Portela has also clarified that, in previous years, “we had the feeling that very valuable people were left out of the nominations.” To date, the only categories with five nominations were Best film Y Best Fiction Short Film.
The president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has added that the Seville capital would be impregnated, in the two weeks prior to the gala, with the spirit of the Goya with a series of activities that the Sevillian public will be able to enjoy —screenings of the nominated films accompanied by meetings with their authors and/or protagonists, round tables with professionals from our industry, exhibitions, concerts and a photocall that will be installed in the City Hall to be photographed with a replica of a Goya Award—actions that will culminate on the night of February 11 next year. Likewise, Rafael Portela has underlined that «the will is to have an Andalusian technical and artistic team for the Goya gala».
On the possibility of international presence at the next Goya gala, Méndez-Leite has said that «last year an award for an international actress was introduced. In the board we are seeing if we continue with that. What we do want is to highlight the importance of the Ibero-American presence in the Goyas, but that does not mean that people like Cate Blanchett do not come».
Great economic impact in Seville
For his part, the mayor of Seville, Antonio Munozhas also highlighted the importance of the Goya gala for the city and has recalled that the celebration of this ceremony in the capital of Seville in the 2019 edition «had an economic impact of 57 million euros». In this regard, the direct impact was estimated at 5 million euros (hotels, restaurants, hiring) and 52.3 million euros of media impact, according to the study carried out by the Academy. “But apart from projecting our international image as a city of cinema and major events and its economic impact, also contributed to reinforcing the municipal work of capturing filming», the councilor has abounded.
Muñoz has also said that the previous Goya gala that took place in Seville «was a blockbuster and was the ppresence of our city on international television and in specialized press around the world. That is why in 2023 the city will once again exceed expectations.”
The mayor has also underlined the relevance of an Andalusian and Sevillian film and audiovisual industry. “There is muscle and identity in that industry. That’s why It is important to take advantage of the presence of the Goya so that the Andalusian industry becomes much more solid. The Goyas come to Seville in a very justified way, since a good local and regional film and audiovisual industry has been consolidated here. That is why we make every effort to make it the best gala of all those that have been held so far.
Antonio Muñoz recalled that “we are working with Spanish audiovisual industry associations, international television platforms and Spanish production companies on a project to set up an audiovisual hub around Fibeswhich will be a space shared by audiovisual companies, which is another of our great commitments to strengthen the business fabric around this cultural industry».
The alderman has guaranteed the president of the Film Academy that the Seville City Council will collaborate in the design of a series of parallel activities so that the city itself “is impregnated” with cinema on the days of the gala and brings it closer to the general public, so as to spread even more the importance that these awards have for Spanish cinema and the recognition of all the professionals of this cultural industry.
