The first SsangYong Rexton arrived in Spain back in 2002. Its proud buyers then boasted of having a real SUV “like a Mercedes, but with a better price,” they said while arguing that the car was equipped with the same engine as the star’s signature , although this was only a half-truth, since the engine itself was a Mercedes design, but it was manufactured in Korea by SsangYong itself.

20 years have passed, and the Rexton reaches its fifth generation. It is a more refined car, it is available with five seats for five adults (although it is true that in the third row of seats they will travel with their legs in an elevated position), and it maintains its good qualities both as a motorway and highway driver and as a get off the asphalt and practice driving 4X4. It is also backed by more than 20,000 units sold since its first generation in Spain.

It is true that the family 4X4 segment (be careful, it is not an SUV, it is a real all-terrain vehicle) is not the one that monopolizes the most sales in the market. But in recent years it has maintained its quota practically unchanged, with an audience that needs a large, familiar car, with a capable trunk, and, above all, a gearbox and dimensions with which to make inroads beyond the poorly paved tracks.

The Rexton more than meets all these requirements and also, if we compare it with its possible current rivals (Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Defender, BMW X5) its price is about 20,000 euros lower. If we look at the leader, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Japanese model also exceeds the Korean by about 10,000 euros.

We have already been able to test the new Rexton, both on the road and highway, on a route between Madrid and Sigüenza, as well as on a 4X4 circuit. And in both circumstances the car complies, and very well, with all the requirements.

Technically, the Rexton has rear-wheel drive or a connectable 4X4, with a reduction gear as standard in all finishes, and the possibility of locking the rear differential at the top of the range. It uses a 202 hp 2.2-liter diesel engine, associated with an AT8 automatic gearbox, one gear more than the previous generation model. Despite the power gain, this automatic transmission and aerodynamics help maintain or slightly reduce consumption, which shows an average of 7.7 l/100 km. In Spain, gasoline versions will not be marketed, and there will be no electrified engines.

On the road it is not particularly heavy, and that is a car that measures 4.85 meters long. It is silent and responds perfectly when stepping on the accelerator to move at legal speeds.

Outside the asphalt again we find a very correct behavior. In addition to the all-wheel drive and elements such as descent control, some dimensions of 20.5 degrees of angle of attack, 20.0 degrees of ventral angle and 22.0 degrees of departure help, with a height to the ground of 224 millimeters. Despite equipping road tires, during the test the car was able to overcome all obstacles without major setbacks.

On the outside, the completely renewed and widened grille with a three-dimensional effect stands out, with more stylized headlights, with a longitudinal design that provides sobriety and elegance. In addition to the headlights, the bumpers are also new.

The interior of the vehicle has also been completely redone. It offers great comfort for the driver and passengers, with a high quality of materials and finishes and a new center console with electronic control to manage the gearbox, a flattened steering wheel at the bottom and a large TFT LCD digital screen as a dashboard. instruments, full color and customizable.

In the safety section, the provision of the new Rexton leaves no one indifferent, up to 9 airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping system, high beam control, blind spot detection system, lane change collision warning , Rear Cross Traffic Assist, Secure Parking Exit Warning and numerous preventive safety systems.
