More and more people are becoming infected with the monkeypox virus in different European countries, with Spain being among the countries with the most infections. In our country it has already been reported 5,162 cases monkeypox, 585 more than last week, according to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE) to August 9, published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Health.

On July 23, 2022, the Director General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern. This virus is usually transmitted through close contact with injuries, body fluids or respiratory droplets from infected people or animals, although it is also being investigated if it is possible to spread it through sex.

the medical journal The Lacent has published the results of a scientific paper in which researchers describe the first case of a dog with confirmed monkeypox virus infection that could have been acquired through human transmission.

HUMAN-DOG MONKEYPOX: BACKGROUND

As reported on the web animalshealth two men attended Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, France, on June 10, 2022. Both had developed anal ulceration 6 days after having sex with other partners. In patient 1, anal ulceration was followed by a vesiculopustular rash on the face, ears, and legs; in patient 2, on the legs and back. In both cases, the rash was associated with asthenia, headache, and fever 4 days later (figure A, B).

Thus, they indicate that the monkeypox virus was analyzed by real-time PCR. In patient 1, virus was detected in skin and oropharyngeal samples; while in patient 2 virus was detected in anal and oropharyngeal samples.

Within 12 days of the onset of symptoms, your italian greyhound breed dogmale, 4 years old and with no prior medical history, presented with mucocutaneous lesions, including pustules on the abdomen and a fine anal ulceration (figure C,D). Finally, the dog tested positive for monkeypox virus by using a PCR protocol.

The DNA sequences from dog monkeypox virus and from patient 1 were compared by next-generation sequencing, showing that both samples contained virus from the clade hMPXV-1, lineage B.1, which has been spreading in non-endemic countries since April 2022 to August 4, 2022, and has infected more than 1,700 people in Francemostly concentrated in Paris, where the dog developed the first symptoms.

The men reported that they slept together with their dogbut stated that they had taken care to prevent their dog from coming into contact with other pets or humans since the onset of their own symptoms (ie, 13 days before the dog began to show skin manifestations).

What to do in case of contagion

Researchers debate the need to isolate pets from people who are positive for the monkeypox virus. Some cities have already taken charge of applying this measure with 3 patients infected with monkeypox who live with pets.

And in the event that a pet was infected, what symptoms could it have? while rodents are usually asymptomatic, other mammals may suffer from skin lesions that extend from the feet and ears to the rest of the body, fever or lethargy.
