During the month of July, sales of electric cars in Spain increased by 37.3%, reaching 2,141 units. Although the contraction suffered by the general automobile marketthe market share of BEVs was barely 3%, far behind the numbers of other European countries such as Germany or France.
Although the plug-in hybrids for their part shipped 3,631 units, it should be noted that their figures fell by 10.1% compared to July 2021. If we add the sales of BEV and PHEV, we will see that in total 5,772 plug-in cars were sold last month; that is, a very slight year-on-year increase of 3.2%. Their combined stake stood at 7.7%.
In the total of the whole year 16,829 electric cars have been registered, 55.6% more than in the same period of 2021, as well as 27,423 plug-in hybrids, which have been satisfied with a growth of 18.4%. The total sum of plug-in cars (BEV+PHEV) is 44,249 units; that is, 30.2% more than last year. The total accumulated share is 9.1%.
“Sales of electrified vehicles continue to progress, showing that they are an increasingly present option for users. […] From ANFAC we insist that a framework must be generated that makes electrification an attractive, safe and accessible option for the user. […] Greater objectives require greater measures, with the current ones it is no longer valid»has declared in relation to these results José López-Tafall, General Director of ANFAC.
The Citroën ë-C4, manufactured in Spain, leads the market
The best-selling electric car in our country in July was the Citroën ë-C4, which shipped 165 units. This is especially positive if we take into account that the French crossover is manufactured exclusively in Spain (specifically at the Stellantis plant in Villaverde, Madrid). So far this year it accumulates 989 units.
Despite the fact that it has improved its records by 323% compared to July 2021, the victory of the Citroën ë-C4 has been by the minimum, since it has surpassed the Dacia spring for just two units. The popular low-cost electric has managed to deliver 163 units during the month of July (interannual increase of 5333%), which indicates that the Spanish market truly demands more affordable zero-emission models. The Spring has registered 458 copies between January and July.
The third position has fallen to the Hyundai Kona Electric, which with 126 units, shows that it continues to be an attractive option for the public despite its seniority. In all of 2022, 607 units of the Korean crossover have been delivered, which has improved its figures by 31% compared to the same month of 2021.

The results for the month of July show that economical electric models are gaining more and more traction. The Citroën ë-C4 is one of the most affordable electric cars in its category, while the Dacia Spring is presented as the cheapest zero-emission passenger car on the market. Also, the top 10 is monopolized by proposals from segments A (urban), B (utility) and C (compact).
By groups, the good results achieved by Stellantis should be highlighted thanks to the success of the FIAT 500 and the enormous deployment of models based on the eCMP platform. It should also be noted the good performance of Hyundai and KIA, whose respective 100% electric ranges are very popular.
Although Tesla has not achieved particularly good figures (remember that it usually concentrates its deliveries in the last month of each quarter), continues to be the best-selling brand in the accumulated. It is to be hoped that when the Giga Berlin factory increases its outputthe company’s numbers vary less from month to month.
At the other extreme we find the Volkswagen Group, which has seen the ID.3 as a model of great strategic importance, has fallen to sixteenth position in the ranking. Interestingly, the CUPRA Born and Skoda Enyaq iV have comfortably surpassed their Volkswagen brothers, since the Spanish is unseating the ID.3, while the Czech has done the same with the ID.4, which does not even appear in the top 20 .
