In a paper published in the journal “Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical SocietyScientists concluded that if a star were to happen to pass too close to our solar system, its gravitational pull could alter the orbit of the planet Neptune and cause irreparable damage to our neighboring planets.

Different simulations were carried out in which it was observed that a star would only need to move the orbit of Neptune three times the distance from the Sun to Earth to generate an imbalance in the entire system, starting with the smallest and closest to the Sun of the planets. , Mercury.

The closest point to the Sun of the first planet in the system moves 1.5 degrees every thousand years. Jupiter moves at a similar rate. If there were a coincidence between these two movements of planets, Mercury’s orbit would be altered or even the planet could be thrown out of the solar system.

Or worse, it could start moving toward Venus and toward our home Earth. However, this is unlikely since Mercury is too close to the Sun to be affected by the gravitational pull of a distant star. Neptune, being the last planet in the system, would be more susceptible.

A variation of 0.1% (equivalent to 4.5 million kilometers) would cause a domino effect of orbital alterations that could affect Mars and Earth in a matter of 20 million years, a fairly short time for the universe.

The research team responsible for the paper carried out 2,880 simulations. 960 resulted in orbital alterations too small to record. Of the other 1,920 models, 26 had catastrophic results, in which planets were thrown out of the system or collided with each other.

However, there is nothing to worry about yet, because the chances of a star passing close to our solar system are only 20 in the next hundred billion years.

The sky turned green in the United States
